Happy New Year from the Birdroom!

Well, handraised birds are flying in and out of the Birdroom this past week. Princess has had one of the longest stays so far, both Green Cheeks and lorikeets from the last post have been sold. As well as that, Mango the Sun Conure has gone to his new home, where he'll be a breeding boy as soon as a girlfriend is found for him. Very happy he has found a new home!

So, let me introduce you to the new kids!

This Lutino (yellow) Scaly was an aviary bird, but I'm working with her, trying to get her used to handling so she can be sold as a semi-tame bird. So far so good, she's not biting, and while she is flightly, she accepts a head scratch and will sit on my shoulder. The regular Scaly on the left is a younger sibling to Heebie and Jeebie from previous posts, whom I've called Chopper because he sounds like a little helicopter when he flies! Princess, nosy as ever, is in the center.

Here's the same three with the Grey Cockatiel, Mango the Sun Conure on his last day, and in the air, flying towards me with the camera, is little Sun Conure, Mango Junior. He went home yesterday, and what a lovely little guy he will be for his new family!

Mango... how tasty are these human things?

"Perfect Conure Camouflage!" Mango Junior flew over while I was preparing the Birdroom's lunch and started helping himself, cheeky little monster!

"Share? Share?" Princess begs a corn kernel off of Mango Junior.

Chopper, upside down!

Princess showing off a feather to Chopper.

Princess trying to befriend the Lutino Scaly.

Princess trying to befriend a slightly bemused Grey cockatiel, who just can't figure out this pushy green bird!

Last up today - this is a young Pied Sun Conure a local breeder of mine showed to me! We're not buying her (Sadly - she's beautiful!) but she is a beautiful bird.

So, that's the new kids! From me and the Birdroom, hope you and your pets have a great
New Year's Eve. Please make sure all your pets are safe tonight for the fireworks :)

Busy Christmas!

Hey everyone! Well, it's been a busy Christmas in the Birdroom, as usual! Though since I had a three-day weekend, I shouldn't complain! Many birds have gone to new homes, the young Alex, both Green Cheek Conures, DJ the cockatoo, and both Lorikeets. We still have the Princess from last week and also Mango, the sun conure. He's been making a little bit of progress as I work with him, though he's still hand phobic, once toweled he will sit on me for a while and in now accepting head scratches! Hopefully he'll continue to improve.

Here's some photos!

Cinnamon Green Cheek (Left) and Yellow-sided (Right) Green Cheek Conures.

"Aren't we cute?"

Princess and young Alex - Princess is very friendly and boldly marches up to anyone, even bigger birds, demanding they love her!

"Yum... metal?"

There are a few new birds arriving this week. Three Pineapple Green Cheek Conures, and today we got a Scaly Lorikeet. As always, more photos soon.

Hope everybody is having a safe and happy holidays, even if you don't get much time off! Please remember to keep birds and other pets safe during the New Year's Eve fireworks :)
Take care all!

Busy Holiday Season

Well, things are in full swing at this time of year! Townsville pets must be very spoiled, I'm sure there will be a fair few presents for our four-legged and feathered family members under the tree this year! Not that I can talk... all of my birds get presents, not to mention Sage the cat, Zeke the dog, and the four bearded dragons...

Newcomers that came in late last week include DJ, a three-year-old attitude-filled cockatoo.

He's a fantastic talker, very clear, with a huge repertoire of words. When dropped off at the airport on his way to Townsville, he yelled out 'MUMMY' as my supplier was walking away from him, turning quite a few heads I'm told! But he's quite nippy and it's slow progress as I work with him trying to build his trust and teach him who is really in charge, since currently - he thinks he is king of the world!

Here is the new Princess Parrot, whom I think is a little boy. He's very chatty, likes to chatter and whistle away to himself.

And some news both good and a little sad - after several weeks with us, Lani the Lutino Lorikeet and Jazz the Rainbow Lorikeet went to their new homes last week. Jazz is back with his old buddy Jeebie, the Scaley lorikeet - I saw photos of them together, snuggling, preening, obviously very content! Lani was overdue for her new home, having been with us the longest, but how I will miss those welcoming squawks when I come into the Birdroom first thing in the morning - and as for the antics she and Jazz got up to together, there was never a dull moment between the two of them! Lani was special to me for another reason - her breeder passed away recently, and she was the very last handraised bird I purchased from he and his family. Nearly all of my lorikeets and around half of the Sun Conures seen over the course of this blog were his birds, and unfailingly happy, healthy and well raised birds they all were. Every time I see one of his birds brought in to visit me, or shown in a photograph, I will remember the effort and love he put into his birds. Finally, I'm expecting a few new arrivals on Thursday. Two Green Cheek Conures, one cinnamon, one yellow sided, plus a Rainbow and a Red Collar Lorikeet. Photos and updates when they arrive!

Back from holidays!

Yup, had a whole week and a half off work! My own birds were delighted, much as I missed the fathered kids at work.

One of the Alexandrines has sold, but Lani and Jazz are still around and living large, as always. I got two Green Cheek Conures in yesterday but I am pretty certain when they go up for sale tomorrow they will go right away, so we won't get time to get to know them well. They are, incidentally, the younger siblings to Trouble, Triss and Trinity, our last trio of Green Cheeks. Every bit as lovely, too, though they are not quite as cheeky as Trouble was!

But not for long! I had to laugh :)

An update from an old friend - one of June's Sun Conures, Foxy, came in to visit on Sunday with his very beloved Green Cheek Conure best friend. Foxy has coloured up into a brilliant little bird, and is every bit as friendly as he always was.

Alex's new digs!

Alex, our store mascot Alexandrine, has been moved to his new deluxe digs :D

As you can see, he's pretty impressed!

Bye Copper - hello again Jazz!

Well, both the new Green cheek and the princess sold, so no photos I'm afraid!

A sad goodbye for the Birdroom staff as Copper went home on the weekend. I miss that cheeky little ratbag already! Here is is practicing his roll from Thursday.

Seems very strange, having no Green Cheeks around the place!

Jazz the Rainbow on the other hand, has come back to us after he didn't work out in his new home. Lani was thrilled to see him again!

Here is the store Alexandrine, Alex, enjoying his favourite snack!

And with the two young boys!

A perfect line of alexes!

Two new kids

Yesterday we got in a blue Princess Parrot, and a little Green Cheek Conure. The Conure has am emphasis on little, she is a petite little thing - especially alongside big boy Copper, the Pineapple boy! Copper, by the way, was thrilled to see another Green Cheek, since he has been missing Trouble and Trinity, even though he has been getting very spoiled from me and the other Birdroom staff! He leaps around and calls and shows off the moment he saw her. I have them housed separately for now since Copper can get a bit too full on at times! If things go well during Sunday playtime (and neither have been sold), I'll probably put them together then.

The Princess seems very lovely if a little nervous still; I doubt she'll be with us long since she's the first baby of the year!

Photos next post :D

Lani and Jazz: Lori Wrestlers Extraordinaries

Jazz sold recently and both Lani and I miss him! Here are some photos I snapped of them playing their favourite game, Lorikeet Wrestle, of which they are absolute champions!

Larrakin Lorikeets

Magically, my camera seems to point itself at Lani and take the photo all by itself... in all liklihood this is the only Lutino Red Collar I'll be able to have until the rarity/price decreases, so I guess I'm making the most of it!

Lani hanging around.

Lani playing with her feet. Don't ask me... it's a Lorikeet thing!

Jeebie sold last week, leaving the Birdroom very quiet with only two remaining lorikeets - Lani of course, and silly clown Jazz the Rainbow. Though Jazz was always Jeebie's special buddy, he and Lani always got along well and with only each other, are having lengthy Lorikeet Wrestle sessions - many of them take place on the floor of Mango's cage, much to the Sun Conure's disgust. Despite his unfriendliness towards the loris, he isn't game enough to do anything about it and will usual sulk, glaring, from the top of his food bowl while the Lorikeets take over the cage floor.

Also got some interesting news back on Olive, the little Scaly Lorikeet who made up the foursome pictures so frequently in the last few posts. His new owner DNA tested him and despite his shy nature that may have suggested being a female - he's a he!

In Conure news, though Red and Mango are still with us and living large...

Little Green Cheek Trinity, the hen and middle child of the trio, went to her new home yesterday. I miss her more than I thought I would after so many goodbyes. She had such a sweet nature and I did so love coming to her cage in the mornings and having her climbing the walls in her impatience to be let out. Copper is our only remaining Green Cheek for now and has turned to people, both staff and customers, for affection. Gone is that naughty nature - he's on his best behavior to get as many cuddles as he can con!

Trinity leaning enticingly towards me, with Copper scrambling to catch up.

Copper grooming, my last cheeky little Green Cheek/ money - for now, at least!

Lorikeets are silly...

It's funny watching the little day to day squabbles in a lorikeet's life. Even a simple grooming ends up with screeched warnings in between snuggling!

Olive has gone to her new home since these were taken. Also off to new homes are Mo the Moustache, Ruby the Alexandrine, Ollie the Sun Conure, Trouble the Green Cheek, and the baby Galah. Ollie and trouble are both going to homes who already have a Sun and Green Cheek, so they will both have bird and human company!

Bye Noisy Nandays

A goodbye today to my Noisy Nandays - the conure pair that have been in the Birdroom for some time. They've gone to their new home today, with a massive aviary and very importantly, a huge property with no close neighbors to annoy with their screaming! These two had the loveliest nature imaginable for aviary birds. I caught them by hand and though they were nervous, their gentle little nibbles at my fingers were amazing for a bird that would usually be gnawing your fingers off! They always came over to accept a sunflower seed or a piece of fruit by hand, and spent most of their time hanging on the front of their cage, squawking at the customers that admired them!

Best of luck to my two big guys - I bet they'll be having beautiful babies soon! I will miss pulling into the carpark and hearing a distant scream I know came from them!

Dynamics

It's really funny, watching how the dynamics change between the little flocks in the Birdroom. The two Scaly Lorikeets, Jeebie and Olive, used to be best friends. Then Jazz (Rainbow) and Lani (Red Collar) came onto the scene. Olive at once shifted his focus to Lani, and I still suspect it's because they were from the same breeder and Olive remembered her. Jeebie seemed to turn to Jazz for comfort when Olive abandoned him, and so, though they all live together, there are the two sets of friends visible.

Jazz and Jeebie.

Lani and Olive.

All four clowning around.

Down to three...

Breakfast!

And here's Lani, lying on her side while playing!

'Nope - I think this is loaded'

Then there's the conures. From the Green Cheek trio, little baby Triss sold quickly, and just after that Copper the pineapple Green Cheek arrived. He and Trinity took a shine to one another that day, and were content to make friends. Trouble, however, thought he had to protect his sister and chased Copper whenever he could, nipping and bullying him. I kept Copper separate from the siblings that night - then, the next day, Trouble watched Trin acting friendly with him, and just followed suit! Now, though Copper still prefers Trinity, he and Trouble get along well too, and they've been moved to the same cage.

Friends from the start - Trinity and Copper.

Now everyone is best friends!

Copper is now confident enough with Trouble, he wants to share his food!

Waving hi!

Stately lady Red watches Trouble having a bath!

The Green Cheeks are watched by Ollie the Sun Conure, who wants to make friends but is too scared of the pushy little Green Cheeks!

Two new kids this week!

Little moustache parrot!

And a quick snapshot of a still-nervous baby Galah... don't get attached, he's likely going to his new home tomorrow!
